Languages

For the purposes of this adventure arc, certain new languages and new uses for current languages are possible to encounter both at this point in the adventure, and in the future segments dealing with these races and others. The languages we are dealing with here are: Aklo (for nagas and serpentfolk), Annunaki (a new language), Draconic (for nagaji), Giant (for nephilim and Valashaians), Nagaji (a new language), Ophiduan (for the psionic race, ophiduans), Valashaian (a new language), Vishkanya, and Vudrani.

Kelimra Rudavani (Serpent Mage-Priestess) speaks the ancient Annunaki tongue when her oracle’s curse is in effect, and those who speak languages similar to, or descended from, this ancient language can attempt to understand it. In addition, many nagaji NPCs present in this adventure segment speak different languages than those listed as the race’s base languages. By using Linguistics skill checks, PCs may determine what others speaking these languages are saying, depending on the language used, and the languages which are similar to it.

Nagaji characters speak Common (Tien) and Nagaji instead of Draconic. Nagaji is a dialect of Draconic, and speakers of one can understand the other without any real problem with a Linguistics check (DC 10), which can be made untrained by a fluent speaker of either Draconic or Nagaji. In addition, any character that speaks fluent Aklo, Ophiduan, Vishkanya, or Vudrani can attempt a DC 15 Linguistics check to understand a Nagaji speaker, which can also be made untrained. The Nagaji language has its roots in Aklo, Draconic (sharing its origins with Ophiduan), and Vudrani (sharing its origins with Vishkanya).

Ophiduan characters speak Common (Tien) or Common (Taldane), and Ophiduan, as normal. Ophiduan is descended from Aklo, Draconic, and Valashaian, and speakers of one can generally understand the others, even though speakers of Aklo and Draconic cannot understand one another. Speakers of Aklo or Draconic attempting to communicate with an Ophiduan, or vice versa, can do so with a successful Linguistics check (DC 10), which can be made untrained. In addition, any character that speaks fluent Draconic or Ophiduan can attempt a DC 15 Linguistics check to understand a Valashaian speaker, but must be made by a trained Linguistics user.

Vishkanya characters speak Common (Tien) or Common (Taldane), and Vishkanya, as normal. Vishkanya is a dialect of Vudrani, and speakers of one can understand the other without any real problem with a Linguistics check (DC 10), which can be made untrained by a fluent speaker of either language.

Annunaki is an ancient and mostly dead language, which requires a successful DC 20 Linguistics check to understand, that can only be made by speakers of the following languages: Aklo, Draconic, Giant, Nagaji, Ophiduan, Vishkanya, and Vudrani. PCs who speak other unrelated ancient or dead languages do not necessarily receive any benefit or ability to make these same checks (such as Azlanti, a contemporary language to Annunaki, but which shares no similar linguistic roots).

Valashaian is an ancient and mostly dead language which is descended from Annunaki, and shares its roots with Aklo, Draconic, Giant, Ophiduan, and Vudrani. Understanding this ancient language requires a successful DC 20 Linguistics check that can only be made by speakers of these listed languages (DC 15 for Annunaki-Valashaian and Giant-Valashaian translations). PCs who speak other unrelated ancient or dead languages do not necessarily receive any benefit or ability to make these same checks (such as Azlanti, a contemporary language to Valashaian, but which shares few or no similar linguistic roots). Giant is descended from Valashaian and other remote shared origins, such as the ancient language of cyclops.
